A Letter To New York City

Saturday, July 27, 2019

Dear New York,

This summer has flown by, it wasn't until about last weekend when I escaped home for a bit of a detox that I realized how fleeting my time here is. A lot is scheduled to change in my life soon, I'm starting my senior year of college and then entering the "real world" shortly there after.

I was unsure about you, New York. In the beginning I was go, go, go, and constantly trying new things, going to new places, and being little Miss Explorer everyday. But then things got busy, I got so caught up in my work, I got stressed and soon the hustle and bustle became less inspiring and a bit more daunting.
Waking up in a windowless room after barely getting four to five hours of sleep each day I was constantly exhausted. Overwhelmed by the amount of work I had to do for myself, and "had" is a strong word. Should I rephrase it and say that I was overwhelmed by the amount of work I wanted to do for myself. The videos I wanted to make, the photos I wanted to take, I wanted to do it all, and yet there never felt like there was enough time in the world to do it.

Bogged down by stress and time, I was feeling at a loss so I ran home! I thought that going home for some time with family, friends and real nature, not city planned greenery, would make me come back feeling recharged, renewed, and refreshed.

The entire train ride back to the city I was feeling good, granted I was watching Stranger Things and eating fresh baked cookies, feeling good was inevitable. But the second, the SECOND I walked off of the train and on to the Penn Station platform I was bombarded with humidity, people shoulder to shoulder, and immediate frustration. I did not want to be back, I wanted to be floating on the river, ears full of water, skin dappled by a mild sunburn from a setting sun like I was the day prior.
For about a day or so this feeling persisted. It wasn't until I was talking to my friend who reminded me that, "tomorrow is a new day." It was Wednesday and something just clicked. All of a sudden, seemingly out of nowhere, I had a great burst of inspiration. I realized that I'm only here for 19 more days, I have to really fill each of those days, and begin them with set intentions and a purpose without being too hard on myself if I don't get things done.

I want to give New York another chance. I had been saying, "maybe it's not for me, maybe I should try San Fransisco or LA after college," but at the same time I don't want to give up. I'm not someone who just gives up. Yes it can be frustrating feeling as though I work, work, work, and see little progress or growth, but that's what sets me apart, and what can set anyone apart too. Working hard.

New York, you are a place that has made me realize my potential. You are a place where I am eager to return to and get my gears moving and grooving. Although there may never feel as though there is enough time to do all that I want to do, I am feeling positive about doing the most for myself. I do what I do because I love it. Even when I take breaks I cant stay away from creating, because it's what I love to do!
New York, maybe you and I are simply meant to be. Perhaps this high strung, humid summer is just what I needed from you to motivate me, that's what a change of scenery should do after all, right?

New York, I'd label our relationship as complicated, something that drives me crazy, but I just can't stay away, sounds a whole lot like love, or at least how it is in the movies.

New York, I hate to leave you so soon, but don't worry, I'll be back.

Yours,
Olivia

HELLO 2019

Tuesday, January 15, 2019

Happy New Year!! Although I've taken a little bit of a break from blogging, vlogging and social media since the new year, I'm back!! I just needed some time to get back in the zone with moving back to school, starting classes, and alllllll that jazz. I'm in Savannah and I'm feeling good! Honestly better than I have in a while!

I thought I would share with you some goals for myself for 2019. Less of resolutions, more of overall goals and aspirations if that makes sense. I don't want to push myself too hard or set unobtainable expectations for myself, that way there is less disappointment at the end of the year when those things don't get done, haha! Makes sense right? Okay let's get started!

(these photos are just a mix of things I've taken over the last week!)
1. Exercise transparency
Lately a lot of the blogging world has become a bit more upfront about their real lives outside of the blogosphere, which I really, really like. That being said I do think there should be some sort of line of what gets published and what doesn't, I just think it's important to share at least some of the good, bad, and the ugly.

There is such a stigma against bloggers for being fake, and only showing the highlight reel. My life isn't all confetti, disco balls, and rainbow patterns, I want to share with you more about my life, of course in addition to sponsored posts and fun photoshoots, but just some more content that is genuinely me.
2. Work on being more CONSISTENT!
Blogging is a LOT of work, all the social medias, YouTube and all that, but it's so much fun. This year when my blog went dark for a while during my time abroad due to domain issues, I got so off track.

I've made clear schedules and want to really work towards being consistent with my posting. It will be a lot of work, but it's worth the work, it's my job, it's what I love to do!
3. Radiate positivity
I want to focus on not only my personal happiness, but others' as well! I'm going to complement more people, tell more silly jokes, and do more small acts of kindness. I want to do as much as I can to spread joy throughout others! Because who couldn't use a little more!?
4. SLEEP
This is a simple one. I need to stop getting into my work at FOUR A.M! I need to just go to bed at reasonable hours and wake up early. I literally will go to bed at 3 and then wake up at 7:45, that's gotta stop...
5. Bet better with money
This is also a logistical one, but I SERIOUSLY need help on how to be better with money, I'm the worst at it! Especially with going to France this year and hopefully working an internship in some other city this summer where I know I'll want to try all the trendy dessert places and all that money wasting stuff haha!!!

Any tips to being more financially stable? lol

That's it for me this year! Like I said, keeping things light, I have a lot going on this year so I don't want to overwhelm myself! I think this is good! Do you have resolutions/goals for 2019?

Here's to the new year! I already have a feeling it will be amazing :-)

Why What I Do is Hard

Warning: very wordy, somewhat ranty post below.

Hello hello! Happy Labor Day, the holiday where work stops and all of America heads to the nearest water source in attempt to soak up the last bit of sun before Summer ends, as always though, work doesn't stop for me. Not even on a holiday. Actually I feel like I work more sometimes when holidays come around. It's an easy thing to shoot, write about, and post about, why wouldn't I? Lately though I have been struggling a little bit with what I do. No I am not technically "employed" and no I do not get payed, not a single penny, but I'm still working as if I do, and I'm getting tired, a little strung out and frustrated with the world of blogging. Here's why...

At the end of this year, it will be a full seven years since I hopped into the world of blogging, also knows as The Blogosphere. When I started I didn't know what I was getting myself into, I didn't know it would become my life. I didn't know that I'd be that friend begging to pull over to take a picture at every colored wall we see, and draining my bank account on photogenic ice cream. But here we are 7 years later. That is my life.

That and pulling all nighters rebranding things people probably don't even notice, drowning in hours of editing videos and photos. Doing endless research to make sure I can come up with funny, fresh, unique content. Learning the way things work like, dare I say the cursed word: algorithms... Hating being that person who uses an abundant amount of hashtags, but hoping no one will notice if I sneak them in. Staying up late, or moving plans around so I can post at the perfect time in order to get the most engagement. It is hard work.
Here's why it's so frustrating. Seven whole years later, and I am seeing incredibly minimal growth. I see people all the time on Instagram posting things along the lines of, "I can't believe it, one year ago today I opened my computer and decided to try something new, and here I am, so thankful for our lovely community, you guys are the best!" Talking to their 30-some-thousand followers... meanwhile me trying to engage with my 2-thousand-some followers who are mainly people who I know on a personal level, it is so hard not to compare myself to these influencers who have some how skyrocketed in the world of blogging and not ask myself, "why in the world am I not that girl?" "WHAT am I doing wrong?"

I work with as many brands as I can to build my repertoire and a good basis of my work ethic in content creation for companies, and still no growth, which means less and less companies want to work with me, which means I don't get payed, which means that I'm not even considered for bigger brand deals. Here's the thing though, I work just as hard if not harder than so many bloggers I see out there in the world. I am completely capable of coming up with creative and fun ways to advertise things that no one has seen before, and yet I go unnoticed. I am there, I am on their level, but I am tied down by numbers. 2,387 followers, an average of 200-350 likes per photo, 12% engagement, 4,000 average monthly blog pageviews, 1,193 subscribers, and an estimated revenue of only $13.15, ranging from 350-1,000 views depending if it's in the right niche. These numbers are incredibly tiny when it comes to being "successful" in the blogging world. Which of course, who wouldn't want to be successful!? I'm a student sure, but I don't have another job, this is not just my hobby, this is my full time hustle, side only to trying to maintain a 4.0, which by the way, also isn't easy...

Don't get my wrong I love what I do, but you have to understand how difficult and aggravating it can be when you try and try and try and still get no attention. And to the readers who aren't bloggers, this probably sounds like the most narcissistic post you've ever read, but when you are your brand it's hard not to be a little bit of a narcissist. And that's the thing, I am putting myself out there, photos of myself, videos of me talking, acting, trying to give advice, photoshoots I think are cool and fun, and then get minimal reactions, it's very hard not to let that get to me. What am I doing wrong? Is it the content? But wait, I am the content, why are people unfollowing me? Do they not like me?! What did I do wrong!?
Bloggers get a lot of hate for what we do. People do think we are incredibly narcissistic, shallow even, and obsessed with being better than others, obsessed with likes. Here's the thing, I don't feel validated by the number of likes (honestly), I see it strictly from the business prospective. I want to create great big things, and the fact that I can market off of myself, and start from essentially nothing except who I am and build off of that, I think that is so cool. Blogging isn't easy, but that doesn't mean everyone can't do it. We live in a world where all of this is at our fingertips, there is no reason not to at least try to create and see where it goes. It's only when you get in deep and start wanting to create full time, that's when the going gets tough.

Here I am trying to make the most out of everything that I do, but with such low engagement, it makes me think, why? Am I wasting my time? When I was at the Teen Vogue summit last winter, I was in a small panel with Olivia Jade (Youtuber, icon girl) and I asked her, "I have been blogging and making videos for some time now, and feel like I am not getting anywhere, how did you, when starting out, get past this feeling of not growing, but knowing you still needed to keep going?" Her answer quite literally was, "You just have to get out there, you have to make that viral video, for me it was my Everyday Makeup Routine video, I woke up the next morning with thousands of views and just kept growing from there! You got this!" *goes on to continue to talk about her boring makeup video... I like Olivia Jade I do, but what kind of advice is that? I keep trying to make "that viral video" but what if I never do? What if my blog never picks up? What if my Instagram followers remain people I personally know and follow back? It is so stressful.

At the end of it all I guess you could just call this a rant, I am going to still work, create, and produce new content for you all, and for myself too. So I'm not going anywhere. Just stressing about it all. Not to mention I have one of the hardest quarters ahead of me at SCAD this fall... But here's to pushing through, kicking the algorithm's butt, and making the best of what I can do! I am determined to keep going, and to do what I love, but please be patient and understand that it is very hard. So here's to that. xo, O

HI I'M OLIVE, THIS IS MY REBRANDING

Hey hey! Notice some changes around here? Not only the layout but the name? Yeah... It is a long story, a story that I am finally ready to tell, TODAY!

If this is your first time here, congrats! Welcome! Stay a while!
But if not and you're used to the blog All Those Little Things, sit back, relax, and accept the change, it's good!
Way back in December of my freshman year of high school I was sitting in study hall with my best friend Ally when she showed me all the cool blogs she followed, I was so inspired I wanted to start one too. But of what I had no idea. Beauty evolved into travel, which evolved into lifestyle, which left me in a slump wondering what the heck I would blog about since none of those previous topics were things I was actually passionate about, but what I was passionate about? Fashion, and All Those Little Things fashion blog was born.

Where'd the name come from you ask? Basically all I have to back that up is the fact that I was a HUGE One Direction fan and named my blog after my favorite song, Little Things. Simple as that honestly.

But I will be completely honest, even though I had to (and I'll get to that) I had played around a bit with changing my blog name to Olive Barrett. My Instagram name is @OliveBarrett, and the rebrand to make things more cohesive seemed to make sense, but I wasn't ready to commit.
It wasn't until I went to Hong Kong when it became necessary. I started to notice glitches whenever I would post and tag the location as Hong Kong, my posts would quit out and I would have to pick up from whatever old place it autosaved. It was annoying but I didn't think much about it.

About three weeks into being abroad, my blog completely shut down. Umm, excuse me WHAT?! I know, it was so frustrating. It wasn't until a bit later when I found out that Google Domains doesn't actually host blogs that are located in certain countries, Hong Kong was one of those... frustrating.

I suppose someone had been watching my site in hopes that I would one day forget to pay for my domain, or ya know, move to Hong Kong, because the moment it disabled, someone swooped under me and bought it! They tried to sell it, probably hoping I would buy it back, but the starting bid they set was for over SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS! Too much, way too much. I love my blog but just between us, I have a little over $75 in my bank account on a good day.
It wasn't until I got home from Hong Kong when I was able to make the call to Google and figure out what the heck was up. They told me that the only thing I could do was to buy a new domain. On the phone with the helpful customer service gal, she gave me what felt like two split seconds to think of a new domain name so I just spit out Olive Barrett!

But I'm actually glad I did. I had been thinking of it for a little bit, and since I changed my email I was due for new business cards anyway. So lots of things are in for some change, I'm actually quite excited about this you guys!! And hopefully you are too! I honestly can't imagine that any of you are or were incredibly attached to the name All Those Little Things and are offended in any way? Maybe some Directioners, but I don't know how that would even play out, we are all on the same team here! It's the same me, same style, same spunk, same love for brunch and pugs, same me!

So subscribe to email newsletters, follow me on Instagram, you won't want to miss a post! This is going to be good you guys :) Until next time, xo, O!

top- Urban Outfitters

Hey
Here we are, I'm officially twenty years old. I started writing on this blog when I was fourteen years old. I was so young; still figuring things out, still deciding what kind of person I wanted to be, my style, my interests, everything. Back then I was just establishing myself as a blogger and in the social media world and look at me now!

I would like to be here in front of you today and say how I've found myself, how proud of the woman I have become and all that coming of age stuff, but the truth is I'm still totally figuring it out. And that is totally, completely, and utterly okay.
Last year I was a freshman in college, I was nineteen. I look around me when I'm with freshman, be it eating in their dining hall, or in a foundations building or something, and I notice the way they hold themselves. They have this sort of air to them, their egos are massive and they think the entire world is theirs. I walked that way last year. Finally in college, finally out on my own, feeling like nothing can stop me, when the truth is everything is all just beginning. I was a tiny fish, just barely entering the massive sea of different adventures life has to offer, awaiting me to dive deeply into it.
A friend of mine wrote a piece once about a similar topic. He went through the different ages, talking about milestones and moments of change that each new age has to offer. He wrote it at nineteen. I remember reading it, I was fourteen at the time, and thinking, "wow, he's so mature, so old, he really knows what he's talking about" and maybe he did at the time! But flash forward to myself at nineteen, I feel so young. Younger even at twenty. It's as if nothing has changed, now there is just more pressure to not mess up.

I remember meeting twenty year olds, whether it be a camp counselor or one of my sisters college friends and thinking, "wow, they are so cool, so grown up, so old, I can't wait to be just like them." But feeling like me being "just like them" was NEVER going to happen, me being "just like them" was billions of light years away. But here I am. I made it, I'm just like them and the time I thought would never come, came, and it now moves really freaking fast and it doesn't seem to ever slow down.
Twenty is going to be a huge year for me. So much had changed in my nineteenth year, I don't even know what to expect for twenty, besides the fact that I am going to have to just take it one day at a time.

Something that I am constantly having to work on is the fact that I over analyze everything, I overthink and I set my expectations for everything way too high. I need to start being easier on myself, and taking everything with a grain of salt. Realizing that not everyone nor everything is perfect, and this whole thing is a learning experience.

I am constantly growing, even if I am now at a point in my life where I thought I would have it all figured out, I know I don't and that is okay. This is just the beginning for me and I cannot wait to see where my wonderful life takes me.
Here's to twenty!! xo, O

Hello beautiful people of the internet!!
This week is international Love Your Body Week, (which should totally be every week in my opinion) and I've got some things to say (prepare for a rant). I've talked in the past about not being totally comfortable in my own skin (1, 2, 3, 4) and all that jazz that almost all women feel at some point in their lives. Especially today where we are constantly surrounded by people who are "better" than us, everything feels like a competition and just a huge comparison game.

Well, today I'm going to talk about something that happened to me when I stepped outside of my comfort zone and posted a photo that was seen as "low-class", "trashy", "totally inappropriate", and "soooo uncomfortable" saying that I was "getting self-respect confused with empowerment." and that it, "is not something a role model to young women would post. It's just not."
I posted the photo above, in addition to some photos of my goldfish and another one of me dancing in my room, a series of sorts you could say, on my Instagram story yesterday around 4pm. I've been in a few relationships and little flings with guys and what not, and I can honestly say that I have NEVER felt sexy, never ever felt genuinely sexy in my body. There have been a few times where I've dressed up super nice and felt like a total 10, for sure, but never ever have I felt sexy, or hot, or desirable. And sure, I'm young, whatever, but in my nineteen and a half years here on this planet I've never experienced the feeling of being sexy. Oddly enough, ever since my breakup I've gained this newfound confidence where I actually do feel somewhat desirable. In my past relationship I wasn't "allowed" to post or even really do anything even slightly revealing, sexy or anything like that or else I would be broken up with. That's pretty screwed up.

I felt like, okay yeah, now that I'm single I can do whatever I want. I was procrastinating on packing for school and I began to take some photos. I was feeling REALLY good. I really liked the way they were turning out, so naturally I continued. And it's not like I'm wearing some crazy strappy lingerie set, or I'm sprawled out on my bed, or tied up or something ridiculous like that, like seriously guys, you've seen this top a million and one times, (1, 2, 3) and I'm just wearing a thong which is basically the same size as some of the trendy bikini bottoms this year. How many times have I posed in MeUndies and no one has had any kind of issue with it? Too many to count. So why does this time, this ONE time I post something with a little bit darker lighting and messy hair make any difference?

This photo is a symbol of me feeling comfortable and confident in my own skin. I'm so so self conscious of my legs, they have cellulite, too many scars to count, little hairs, and scratches everywhere. I don't have a toned butt or anything like that at all, my stomach isn't flat by any means, So the fact that I even put this photo out there was a big step for me. I'm posing in a way where I LOOK and FEEL excellent.

Never before feeling sexy, posting this was the first time I really did, and the best part about it, I wasn't with some guy, I took this on self timer, I was 100% feeling myself.
I decided to post it about an hour after editing it, saying, "okay, okay you know what, this is a GOOD photo. It'll be totally fine. Even though you would typically be self conscious about it, it's all good because you are so beautiful and strong and you GOT THIS! Go for it!" So I did.

Immediatly comments started streaming in:
"you are stunning n beautiful n I'm blessed to have seen this photo"
"Yesss girl!!... you're killing it!!"
"Loooooove this"
"So beautiful!!"
"A++++++"
"HOT DAMNNN MAMA *intert fire emojis here*"
"Can I just be you??"
"girl we MUST shoot together soon, you're killing it"

and then I got the
"whyyyy?"
and the long messages tearing any self confidence I had down began.

I think, at nineteen, being a young woman in 2017, honing in on my sexuality and body confidence is so important to discovering who I am as a woman as I continue to grow. And sure, maybe I am a role model for younger women and girls, but I want my message of, "hey this is me, feeling amazing, being comfortable in my own skin looking like a total star, one day I hope you feel the same when you grow up a bit" to come through.

To future employers, I'm going to be completely honest, I really really don't care. Any job I would ever apply or want to work for would and should be totally fine with body confidence, and if they aren't, then they aren't the company for me. I'm not looking to work in any kind of corporate position or for like a law firm or anything like that. So what the heck matters!

So yeah, I could have posted a photo of me on the beach in a swimsuit, but that isn't nearly the same, like at. all. I wanted to feel sexy and powerful and confident, so I took a few photos, found one I liked and was proud to post it and show off my strong wonderful body. Why do you think Boudoir shoots are a thing???

I vow to NEVER bring any woman down for being "too" sexy or posting something that is "too" revealing. Honestly people, we all have boobs, what's the big surprise?? Every woman struggles and deals with her own insecurities, so the moment that she puts herself out there and posts something showing off her fantastic body, don't you ever for a second think to shower her with anything but genuine complements. It's 2017, women are allowed to be seductive and show off, get over it.

Below are a few photos from Instagram of other badass babes working it in front of the camera. There is no need to hide your sexuality, or your body, or anything like that. Dare to be beautiful and strong and capable of desire. All women are so so incredible and shouldn't have to hide all that goodness, and if you don't have anything nice to say or disagree, please escort yourself out.

It's Tuesday, but this time instead of ten things I've found while toddling around on the internet, I'm going to share with you ten goals I've set to better myself. Recently I've gone through a pretty bad breakup, my first break up actually. And I'll be honest with you, it hurt, like crazy, like it felt like someone came in the middle of the night and took my lungs out of my chest, and I woke up unable to breathe, gasping for air. Dramatic I know, but completely serious. The depression was real.

Thank you for allowing me to be honest on this platform sans any kind of judgement. It's okay to not be okay. But today I'm going to share ten things I'm going to do to reach ultimate "okay-ness" Okay? thanks. Here we go.

BFFS IN SAVANNAH ft. a lil rant

Monday, June 12, 2017

As most everyone and anyone on social media knows, the other day was National Best Friend Day. It's been FORRRREVER since Ally and I have gotten any good photos taken together, so when she came to visit me in Savannah I knew I had to get one of my many talented photographer friends to shoot us, so a HUGE thank you to Taylor Wedding for taking these :) They sort of look like engagement shots, but HEY that's totally okay with me, Ally is basically my soulmate, so you know... it's whatevers. I don't miss the Savannah humidity and the work that comes with going to SCAD, but I do miss all the beautiful streets and spots to take photos that's for sure.

I know I said in my last post that tomorrow, being a few days ago, that I'd be back to my "regularly scheduled programing", as in posts everyday, but for whatever reason it's been somewhat hard getting back into the groove of blogging. I still love photoshoots, editing photos and writing, I do, but since finals, and being home, and just not blogging for a while, I've realized that blogging is SUCH a big deal. Getting my makeup all done up, finding an outfit, taking photos, editing those photos, and finding something to write about, is a lot more complicated than it seems. The funk that I was in before has now transitioned from being a social funk to being a blogging funk. I'll get back to it, but honestly, what gives? I have a lot of plans for the blog to come soon, so just wait for those, hang in there :)

Also time for a ranting side note: Regarding my Magic of Vulnerability post, I had a woman who refers to herself as a "creative consultant" say that publishing content like that is absolutely not what I should be posting. That that's not what viewers want to see, it's off putting, and unprofessional. If this past year at SCAD has taught me anything it's that being open to a critique and criticism is so important, and I am open to that, but I'd just like to clarify that I'm my own personal brand. I'm not selling you anything, I'm not trying to be famous, or something that I'm not, I'm trying to be myself and be me. I think that more than anything, it's more difficult to open up and be real on social media than it is to create a brand for yourself and build up a name. As I said before, my brand is me, Olivia Ruffin, not everything is perfect all the time, fashion, food, travel, and MORE Olivia Ruffin. Just Olivia Ruffin. I'm complex and do have many things that I do and I love, but first and foremost I'm myself, I don't ever plan to be fake, or to conform to a set of rules to gain followers, or popularity, I blog because I love it, I am working towards a degree in fashion marketing because I love it, not because I'm doing whatever I can to get famous and get likes. So yes, I will continue to write all the ushy mushy gushy posts I can, I'll dare to be personal and make my readers and viewers uncomfortable, because I feel connected with you all, I want to share my life with you, and not only the good points. And if you can't handle that, than you're in the wrong place, sorry I'm just not the right client for you.
Thanks for letting me rant. Stick around for more. And sorry to all you creative consultants out there, but I won't be giving you what you want any time soon, that's all.

For more of me, stick around! I'll see ya tomorrow chickadees, xo, O
